Energy Conservation

With its global force of installations, ports, vehicles, aircraft, ships and submarines, the U.S. military is the nation’s largest consumer of energy — and therefore potentially the largest source for energy conservation and cost savings.  In May 2009, BENS  convened a conference of national energy policy experts to examine how the Defense Department can adopt private-sector conservation and efficiency methods as well as a unified, comprehensive and strategic approach to managing its energy use.

BENS plans to launch an energy project in 2010 in cooperation with the Department of Defense to identify ways to make mission-critical domestic military installations energy self-sufficient, with an eye toward helping the Department of Defense meet its targets for carbon reduction.
