BENS Spotlight

BENS Cybersecurity Initiative

At the suggestion of the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, BENS has been undertaking an effort to heighten the awareness of CEO's and board members on the severity of the cyber threat to U.S. critical infrastructure and intellectual property. As BENS has pursued this mission, members realized that after CEOs and board members learn about the cyber threat, they do not have an easily accessible resource to learn how to assess their own company's cyber vulnerability or implement an effective program to address the cyber threat. BENS now proposes to create a business case for the formation of an entity to promote CEO and Board cybersecurity awareness, best practices, and tools—including a cybersecurity maturity model. The goal of the Initiative is inclusion of cybersecurity in enterprise risk management at the Board and CEO level, thus strengthening cybersecurity in the private sector to protect the nation's economic future and to better support our national defense establishment.

BENS anticipates that the coming months will provide many opportunities for the Cybersecurity Initiative to advance its mission as cybersecurity continues to take a front seat in the national dialogue, especially following President Obama's issuance of a Cybersecurity Executive Order.
